Position: Farm Staff

Location: Marlborough, NH
Overview
We are looking for enthusiastic, hard working individuals who want to share and enhance their farming skills and be a part of our farming community. This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in diverse small-scale farming, ecological agriculture, and/or farm education (school gardens). Our farm in summer has:

  • 1/3 of an acre in no-till produce, a greenhouse, and high tunnel
  • 1/2 acre orchard, plus additional berries and herb/flower gardens
  • 300 laying hens (with chicks arriving in May and August)
  • 100 broilers (chicks arrive July)
  • 10-12 pigs (piglets arrive in early May)
  • A small flock of sheep (five adults with lambs due soon!)

The farm supplies the camp kitchen with most of the produce and meat, and all of the eggs used during our camp programs, as well as wool and dye for fiber arts. Interns will be able to participate in the day-to-day operations of the farm, including:

Vegetables: greenhouse and high tunnel management, season extension, seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvest, wash & pack, no-till methods and soil health, irrigation, and integrated pest management.

Animals: feeding, watering, and general animal care; rotational grazing, silvopasture, fencing, and pasture management.

2 position durations:
1. June-August farming (summer camp)
2. May-October farming

Full time, seasonal, salaried, at will employment. Compensation includes pay, room, and full board. We strongly encourage all interested applicants to apply!

Core Responsibilities:
1. Assist the farm director in the work of our small, diverse, sustainable farm. This includes the daily chores and care of our plants, chickens, pigs, and sheep.
2. Educating children, young adults, and families on our farm.
3. Work with the farm manager to make produce deliveries to the kitchen.
4. Keep farm production records.
5. Weekend chores on a rotating basis with other farmers.
6. Help slaughter poultry on site ( September only, flexible on this, as some belief systems don’t allow for participation in this work).

Additional responsibilities:
1. Attending weekly staff meetings, weekly work together time, and some professional development opportunities.
2. Potential once yearly trip to our parent organization, the Waldorf School of Garden City in New York.
3. Preserving farm products with the kitchen staff.
4. Upkeep of the aesthetics of the farm, especially before big events.

Job requirements:
1. Ability to pass a background check due to our work with children
2. Positive attitude and willingness to work hard.
3. Some experience farming or educating or doing physically demanding work.
4. Ability to lift 50 pounds.

Non-required but desired qualities:
1. A driver’s license and clean driving record to meet our insurance company’s requirements.
