It is with profound sadness that we inform you that Camp Glen Brook will not operate Summer Camp Session 1 or 2 in 2020 due to COVID-19.
We have been working hard to find a path to safely open this summer because we know that Glen Brook is what campers need—this year more than ever. At every turn we have kept two questions in the front of our minds: How can we confidently care for our campers in this uncertain situation; and, how can we bring the power of nature-connection and community to young people this summer?
In the many scenarios we imagined, we established some clear lines: we knew that if children could not hand each other a broom; if children were not permitted to pass a ball between them; if a homesick child could not receive a comforting hug from a counselor, then we would not be able to offer the caliber of compassionate and creative programming that makes us who we are. With the current recommendations in place from the Center for Disease Control, the American Camp Association, and the State of New Hampshire, coupled with the uncertainty around what the requirements may yet be, we cannot confidently plan to offer a physically and emotionally safe Glen Brook Summer Camp experience that we can stand behind this summer.
We are devastated by this decision, even while we believe it is the best one. Glen Brook exists to connect people with each other and the natural world, and our campers are in real need of that connection. There has been much sorrow and many tears shed making this decision, and we have no doubt there will be more in the next few days. We take some solace in knowing that the sadness we’re all feeling is a reflection of how wonderful, meaningful, and beloved Glen Brook is.
Our gap program is getting ready for the fall semester and you can read more here.
As you can imagine, closing summer camp will have an enormous impact on our finances. We know we are not the only ones struggling in this uncertain time.
