Two groups departed Glen Brook in the past 24 hours for their canoe trips - the Eagles on the Saco River in Maine, and the Falcons for the Magalloway River in New Hampshire. Both were headed toward sunny skies and mild temperatures with no rain in the forecast. The Falcons completed their hand-carved (and beautifully decorated) canoe paddles in time for their morning departure. Carving the paddles serves several purposes: providing a personal memento for their paddling voyage and toughening their hands, through the use of spokeshaves and drawknives, for the rigorous paddle. Both groups return to Glen Brook in time for the July 4th celebrations Sunday. Meanwhile, back in camp, the remaining groups celebrated Upside-down and Backwards Day yesterday - charging around the Rec Hall in an absurd, colorful parade.
