The Falcons have been on two expeditions so far: caving in the Schoharie region of upstate New York and paddling on Lake Umbagog in Northern New Hampshire. The caving offered plenty of mud, small, dark holes through which everyone had to wriggle, and immense subterranean caverns to disconcert even the least agoraphobic. Caving is nothing if not a bonding experience, which is why Falcon leaders typically lead off a session with this trip. There's nothing like the feeling of isolation while deep underground and surrounded by rock. To having a comforting word or a hand outstretched in the dark is cause for joy. To cite an old cliche in outdoor leadership: the Falcons departed Glen Brook as 13 individuals and returnedĀ as one.

Their paddling trip was exhilarating - but the weather was poor. No matter. The trip was a success nonetheless. Now, the group is resupplying for their next adventure, backpacking in the Whites, doing their own meal planning, shopping, and cooking.
